Earlier this year we received a product based on a superfood called spirulina – a blue-green algae that’s become quite popular as a nutritional supplement. Since we have been taking spirulina in tablet form in our personal lives for years, we’ve decided to take up the offer and review this product, specifically Spiral Spring’s 500 tablet product. Since taking spirulina in tablet form rather than as a powder is more palatable and less messy, we chose to take it for a month before we wrote this review. Besides spirulina tablets we also tried Spiral Spring’s Choco Spring, a powdered blend of spirulina, oats, cocoa, and cinnamon. Given the added ingredients sounded as if they would make taking spirulina in powder form delicious, we decided to try it out.
What’s special about Spiral Spring’s spirulina is that they are the only supplier that produces products using Spirulina Maxima instead of Spirulina Platensis (Arthrospira Platensis). Most of the spirulina in the world is Spirulina Platensis, which is not as complete as Maxima in terms of content of protein, clorophyl and phycocyanin, therefore the better for nutritional and therapeutic purposes. Many distributors say they have Spirulina Maxima, but they cannot prove it.
You’ve heard brands claiming that their products are “superfoods” wherever you go these days. But did you know that Spirulina, gram for gram, may be the single most nutritious food on the planet? It’s loaded with protein, nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, and carotenoids, as it offers health benefits to practically every organ and body function.
So What is Spirulina Maxima?
Spirulina Maxima is called the most nutritious and concentrated natural supplement known by humanity. It is a great source of antioxidants, proteins, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, phyto-nutrients, pro-biotics, and nutriceuticals; making it one of the healthiest foods on the planet. Spiral Spring comes from Solarium Biotechnology SA, with more than 15 years of experience, with its spirulina products certified by the PhycoTech Institute in the US. Some additional benefits of using the Spiral Spring line of spirulina products is that they their spirulina grown in the Pampa aquifer in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, and all their powders and tablets are organic, non-GMO, kosher and, of course, gluten-free.
Our Impressions
The tablet version of Spiral Spring’s spirulina was an easy pill to swallow along with a beverage and and kept together quite well prior to taking it. We took them every morning for a month and felt our energy levels and clarity were noticeably elevated. We also took the Choco Spring powder mix every day and found it to be a delicious addition to a smoothie. We even tried it with plain water and it was really good so whichever way you choose to take it you can be assured you won’t find it to be difficult to get down like spirulina powder sometimes is. While it does smell like algae, it’s not that big of a deal considering how that’s just how spirulina is. The addition of oats, cocoa, and cinnamon certainly brings a more gentle aroma which is nice. We like this spirulina so much that we’re going to continue using it on a daily basis and given how incredibly healthy spirulina is, we recommend you also make it a part of your daily dietary supplement intake for an optimally healthy life.
