The Importance of Unconditional Self Love

On the Spiritual Path, we have to learn to love ourselves unconditionally. We will make choices that we will later reprimand ourselves for. But then, what we are doing is choosing to separate ourselves from Great Spirit. We are making the same mistake twice, (or perhaps many times) once for making the error in the first place, and again in chastising ourselves for making it. Each of those acts is choosing to be separate from Love, which is really all there is.

Tests come to us when we are ready to move further on our path of evolution. When we are ready to make choices from the place of who we are in our highest, most conscious, soul evolution. It has been my experience that the soul uncovers more of itself as we grow, and the ego, the inner child, and other parts of us (like our personalities) have to catch up. Imagine how the Spiritual Plane of Astral Consciousness has a much more refined vibration. It moves very quickly since the energies are so subtle. Our minds and bodies have much denser, slower moving vibrations, and they need more time to absorb these higher teachings. They also need time to practice acting out and integrating new awareness, which is not always flawless in transition.

When we move forward on our Spiritual Path, we make choices in alignment and in integrity with EVERY aspect of our consciousness. We make decisions that reflect the highest evolution of our soul’s growth. So, in mind (thought), body (action), word (mental), and deed (physical), we are congruent with the spiritual evolutionary plane, and are making choices and decisions from our deepest knowing, from our heart’s intuition. These choices are based in True Alignment, in alignment with who we are becoming.

Sometimes though, we fall short and miss, and our physical and mental bodies are still playing catch up with what we are consciously aware of as Truth. Then our test comes again but in another version. And the question is, again and always, “How much do you love your Self?” Now you have the opportunity to practice Radical Self Forgiveness, an asset to those on the Spiritual Path. Forgiveness is the key to this journey if we are to bring heaven to earth and alleviate suffering on the planet. And it starts… as most things do, within.

So, when you make a choice that does not reflect what you know in your current evolution to be a true reflection of who you are, and is rather a reflection of your past, take heart. Choose now, to align with love instead of fear over and over again. Self-forgiveness, radical self-acceptance, offering yourself your own approval, all boil down to practicing unconditional self love.

What does it really mean to be unconditional? We hear that word a lot and are often desensitized to it, so let’s break it down.

Unconditional means that no matter what acts you perform, how you carry yourself, or which choices you make… no beating yourself up! No chastising yourself for your perceived flaws or faults, for the ‘karma’ that holds you back, for having these lessons to learn, for being human and going through these trials and tribulations, for knowing better though still acting like you didn’t, for speaking untruths to yourself or others.

No more shaming yourself. No more wishing you could just break on through. Instead, utilize every perceived failure as an opportunity to pass another spiritual test, How will you treat yourself after your decision? How kind can you be? How much do you really love yourself? How compassionate are you with yourself? How much forgiveness do you show yourself? How open is your heart to your own Self, your life, and each and every choice you make?

Choosing your Self is so important.

For those of us, especially women I feel, but also some men, whose lives are focused on healing and nurturing others, we so often forget to put ourselves first and keep our frame of reference, as well as our boundaries, healthy. To be truly effective nurturers within our society, we must take deep care of and have reverence for our own processes in life, the same way we would do for our children and those we love and care for.

Practicing unconditional self love on a daily basis starts with the time you take for nurturing yourself through self care, meditation, quietude, and rest. Even allowing yourself to be in a mood, go through your cycles, and HONOR all of them. It takes practicing integrity, making your schedule with you in mind, creating enough space in your calendar so you don’t run yourself ragged, and taking time to just be still. There is such joy in taking care of our bodies, skin, hair, nails, taking long baths, taking pleasure in life, eating lightly, making beautiful meals, wearing silk robes, and drinking water infused with fruit and leaves like mint, strawberries, and cucumbers…

Take the time to get to know yourself through journaling. Writing out your emotions is and act of courage and bravery. Remind yourself of where you have been and how far you have come by reading your journal every once and a while too. Tune into your own inner wisdom. Your heart is wiser than you give it credit for and learning to love yourself as you would a partner is a gift that you can give yourself the honor of partaking in.

As you learn to love yourself unconditionally no matter what your actions, to show yourself compassion no matter what your altitude, you will carry yourself with a gentle grace and allow the vibration of forgiveness to be shared outwardly with others. You will be a fountain of compassion, and heal the world, as well as your relationship to the most important soul you will ever know in all your life… your own.
